Barris joins Alzheimer’s awareness event

Responding to a request by author Joanne Elder, Ted Barris is joining 26 other writers in the “Authors Fight Alzheimer’s Book Signing Fundraiser” on Monday, Jan. 30, at the North York Central Library Auditorium. In the first event of its kind, Barris and 26 other authors will sell and sign copies of their books to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. He joins such authors as Sandra Clarke, Kevin Craig, Nancy Bell, Deron Douglas, Anne Grobbo, Doug Smith, Caitlin Sweet, Erik Buchanan, J.M. Frey, Karen Dales and others, selling their books and contributing proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

Where: North York Central Library Auditorium, 5120 Yonge Street (between Sheppard and Finch on west side), Toronto.

For the 11th straight year, the East York Campus of Centennial College presents its unique Remembrance Day observance in the campus library. Each November 11 since 1999, Ted Barris has presented veterans who offer their personal reminiscences of Canadian wartime events. They are featured as part of a traditional ceremony – complete with colour party from the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 617), Last Post/Reveille and Two-Minutes Silence. Immediately following the ceremony, the public is invited to join the veterans for refreshments

As part of its fall 2011 program, the Pickering Township Historical Society has invited Ted Barris to pay a return visit and address the members at their regularly monthly meeting. On Tuesday, September 13, 2011, he will speak about the job of getting veterans to speak about their experiences; his talk is based on one of his recent bestselling books, “Breaking the Silence: Veterans’ Untold Stories from the Great War to Afghanistan.” Copies of a number of Ted’s books will be on hand for sale and autographing.

Barris brings Vimy talk to Richmond Hill Historical Society

Ted Barris has been invited to the Richmond Hill Historical Society on Monday, November 21, 2011, to deliver one of his most sought-after talks – his recounting of the “Victory at Vimy.” It’s a unique telling of the famous WWI battle at Vimy Ridge, that, he says, gave birth to Canada’s nationhood. Barris will offer insights and images gleaned from some of the individual accounts – old interviews, memoirs, letters and diaries of the Canadian Corps troops – he assembled in the research/writing of his book “Victory at Vimy: Canada Comes of Age, April 9-12, 1917.”

Ted Barris has spoken at least half a dozen times to the G.M. Salaried Retirees Association of Oshawa and area. This year he returns to speak about the forgotten war. With the re-issuing of his book “Deadlock in Korea,” he has been asked to tell the stories of the men and women who served in the first defence of the U.N. Peace Charter at the 38th Parallel on the Korean Peninsula. As always, he will have copies of his books for sale and autographing.
