Each Canada Day, Canadians continue to ask: What sparked Canada’s rapid expansion from coast to coast? Among the catalysts for Confederation were steamboats, or “fire canoes,” as aboriginal people called them. In large measure, the national dream of a Canada from sea to sea was realized aboard Mississippi-style paddlewheel steamers that plied western waterways on the eve of Canadian Confederation.

On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, historian Ted Barris pays a return visit to Collingwood’s Four Seasons Probus Club with stories from his book Fire Canoe, describing why & how steamers hastened Canada’s Confederation. There are tales of American mercantile interests invading the West, answered by the age-old Hudson’s Bay Co. with a fleet of steamers of its own. Steamboats propelled federalist forces against two rebellions in 1870 and 1885. And for 25 years paddlewheelers brought waves of immigrants to settle on the Prairies.

Ted Barris has published 20 non-fiction books, half of them wartime histories. His book, The Great Escape: A Canadian Story, won the 2014 Libris Award as Best Non-Fiction Book in Canada. His book, Dam Busters: Canadian Airmen and the Secret Raid Against Nazi Germany, received the 2018 NORAD Trophy from the RCAF Association. And his book, Rush to Danger: Medics in the Line of Fire, was long-listed for the 2020 Charles Taylor Prize for Non-Fiction in Canada. In December 2022, Ted Barris was appointed Member of the Order of Canada.
